5Xpicasso

"5Xpicasso" is the project title selected for the AREAL interdisciplinary residency program. The project proposed by Alexandru Patatics, visual artist and Univ. lecturer at the National University of Arts Bucharest, started from the idea of constructing 5 performative moments, which have a symbolic connection with the complex artistic personality of Pablo Picasso and his artistic periods throughout his long career, symbolically commemorating the 50 years since the artist's death.

The residency program took place in the spaces of MARe/Museum of Recent Art and AREAL, in which the artists Simona Paraschivu - performer/choreographer, and Diana Zavalas - audio artist, as well as students from the “Floria Capsali” Choreography High School, maintained the composition of a group formed following an AREAL Mentoring project (held in the spring of this year).

During the residency, the artists, inspired by the work of P. Picasso, chose and reinterpreted artistic themes from the artist's most representative 'paintings', visual material that served as a reference in constructing the performative elements.

"The 3 Musicians", "La Vie" ('life'), "Guernica" ('war'), "Femme au Miroir" ('woman and mirror') and "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" are the visual themes selected and recontextualized in the experimental process undertaken by the group of participating artists, and the involvement of students from the Choreography High School alongside the artists was an important component of the residency, a continuation intended to encourage lively dialogue, the exploration of interdisciplinary artistic practices and the approximation of future performers to the language of the visual environment; of photographic and video recording techniques, of controlled stage lighting projections and effects in the performative space, alongside the sound one; a complex ambient and musical mix.

The result of the residency will also be presented to the public in the form of a video that can be viewed on October 12, as part of the "Picasso Effect" exhibition, which will be launched this fall at MARe/Museum of Recent Art.FRAGMENTARIUM / 2011 /a multi-disciplinary experiment oriented towards site-specific performances and video art. It gathers a group of artists with different backgrounds: visual art, choreographers, performers, etc.
